Hello Chamber Members,

In April, the Government Affairs Committee hosted Kevin Arkoosh from the Office of U.S. Senator Jim Risch. Mr. Arkoosh provided an update on several federal issues currently under review and how they may impact Idaho.

One area of discussion was the Defending Our Government Expenditure (DOGE) initiative. According to Mr. Arkoosh, the approach to federal spending reform is shifting from broad cuts to a more targeted strategy that includes both fiscal restraint and investment in essential infrastructure programs.

The conversation also addressed workforce challenges in Idaho’s dairy industry, particularly regarding undocumented farm labor. Senator Risch’s office acknowledged the economic importance of the agricultural sector and stated that legislative efforts are ongoing to support the industry while addressing related labor concerns.

Additionally, updates were shared on national trade policy and its implications for domestic manufacturing. Idaho was noted for having access to key minerals that could play a role in reducing reliance on foreign supply chains. While the state has not historically been a leader in mining, there is potential for growth in this sector if future policy aligns with resource development goals.

The next Government Affairs Committee meeting will take place the last week of May. The featured speaker will be Kate Simmonds from Lift Local, a nonprofit organization focused on empowering cities with tools and resources to manage local infrastructure more effectively.
